Since it was first identified in December 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused over 2 billion cases of the disease, COVID-19, and over 4.5 million deaths.

What have we learned so far?

What questions remain unanswered?

Scientifically, the COVID-19 pandemic has been marked by tremendous global cooperation in terms of information sharing and research collaboration between institutions, and across borders. In addition, there have been unprecedented levels of cooperation between research institutions, health services, public health institutes, governments, and international organisations – and communities. Nearly 8 billion people are participating in what is essentially a global experiment.

ECTMIH 2021 has dedicated an entire Congress Day to address these questions and more. In addition, experts from Swiss TPH will host a special lunch Symposium addressing "What did you want to know about COVID-19?". Learn more below.

Topics will include:
  • international collaboration to control the COVID-19 pandemic – successes and challenges
  • the virus and our immunity
  • vaccine development and scientific collaboration
  • vaccine manufacturing and global distribution
  • the corona pandemic - what can we learn for migration as a determinant of health?
  • COVID-19 care in LMIC and long-COVID
  • panel discussion on global perspectives - prevention and control strategies
  • how do epidemics end?

Wang played a leading role in identifying bats as the natural host of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus. His research then extended from bat-borne viruses to better understand virus-bat interaction and how bats co-exist with a large number of viruses without developing clinical diseases. His recent research contributions include developing antibody based serological tests to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for the COVID-19 outbreak, and the early and successful culture of the virus from an infected patents sample.
